Lynn Hicks
Lynn is from Piedmont, SC. She is a 1977 graduate of Wren High School. She played
basketball, volleyball, and ran track while at Wren High School. These were the only
female sports offered at Wren High School at that time.
Lynn attended Erskine College and received a B.S. in Health/Physical Education. She
also received her Master’s degree in Physical Education/Health from Furman University.
Lynn was married 18 years to Neal Hicks (deceased).
After graduating from college, Lynn began her teaching career in Anderson District 5 at
McDuffie High School, where she taught physical education and health. Lynn’s next and
final stop was in Anderson School District, at her alma mater, Wren High School. While
at Wren she taught physical education, sports medicine, health, family life, group
dynamics, advanced weights and basketball techniques. In addition to her teaching
career, Lynn coached basketball and softball. She guided her softball team to the 2008
Class 4A State Championship. She retired from coaching basketball in 2015, teaching
in 2017 and coaching softball in 2021.
Lynn’s says her fondest teaching memory is watching her athletes grow.
“Realizing those many athletes that I have coached have become extremely successful
individuals, careers, family and community leaders. The timing of what seems trivial at
the time: comments, compliments, critiques, given, have been remembered, cherished
and recycled into the athletes’ lives. Knowing the impact made in the past is used in
current situations (not just athletically but as a whole individual unit).”
Lynn’s most memorable coaching moments include all the multiple upper state finals
moments and the 2008 Class 4A softball state Championship.
Lynn’s greatest accomplishments include
2023 SCACA Hall of Fame Induction,
2008 NFHS National Softball Coach of the Year, and
2008 South Carolina state Coach of the Year.
Lynn is enjoying travel in her retirement, as well as, fitness activities (“Y”, pickleball,
hiking, etc.)
